“Every new item often is an old, but a well forgotten one” – a proverb says. Our active, but sometimes stagnant life-style, a permanent state of stress make us return to our parents times and observe antecedents, who lived a long-year life and have not suffered of asthma or allergy.
In the most European countries, especially in
Timber (wood) is an ecologically pure natural constructing material, free of any negative impetus to a human organism. Vise versa, some researcheres state that a warm, natural color of pine or fir positively influences human mental state, stabilizes nervous system and provides a friendly conditions for a good rest. Electrostatic properties of wood ensure, that a room will be free of static electricity, so any dust will move and cause allergic reactions. A timber house could be used in summer, as a conventional small house, a bath-house in the garden or near the lake in order to have a rest with a minimal communications and facility. What is more! A timber house could be easily mounted and equipped as a brick-built or a precast one, with a long-term windows, doors and roof cover, modern finishing, sanitary technics and heating equipment, also all other advantages. Construction and maintenance of a timber house seems to be expensive and complicated only from the first view. Constructing of a timber house costs similar to a brick-built one. Moreover, a timber house is constructed within shorter terms, so working expenses become lower. Let us analyze.
In case of a timber house construction, a heavy, capital foundation is not necessary. You will be released from a set of “not visual” expenses: wall insulation, finishing of external and internal walls – ones could be made of timber or wood. Are you afraid of winter frosts? If timber is a well-prepared and a drained one, its resources will stand even severe frosts. Wooden wall of a 20 – 26 cm diameter has an important feature – due to a low heat circulation it stores heat equally to a 1.2 m thickness wall. Wooden walls store heat and deliver it within a room. Timber house heats quickly and cools step by step, so there is no necessity to mount expensive ventilation and conditioner system, the house “breathes” and ventilates naturally via walls. The mentioned house prevents from breathing uncomfortably dry air, if compared with a brick-built flats or houses during a heating period. During a rainy season you will not feel excessive moisture, as timber preserves a good moisture balance. In case a level of moisture increases, a part of it is absorbed by the timber. When a room dries, moisture is returned back. A duly maintained timber house will serve 150 or 200 years, with a repair similar to a routine arrangement, but not a scaremongering discomfort with scrapping, detaching wallpapers, amount of rubbish, dust, paint etc. A natural fact, that timber could be affected by sun rays, rain and changes in temperature. Cover it with an additional paint layer every 2-3 years. Internal walls will need some repair after 10-12 years only. We are glad to see, that construction culture looks back to using of traditional natural materials. A conventional pine log in a well-experienced carpenter’s hand reveals all its exclusive features. In order to manufacture a duly house, not only a high-quality material is necessary. Excellent skills, formed by our parents and transferred to us through the generations are absolutely mandatory. It is more likely, that the Norse, the Dane or even the conservative Englishmen will be the pioneers in constructing Lithuanian timber homes. In
